MDA Fill-the Boot
SFD has been partnered with the MDA for many years and has had great success. The citizens of Sherwood are the most charitable people in the state. We want to thank you and challenge you to out do yourself. Thanks to the citizens, the fire department has won the Golden Boot Award the last year and anticipate winning it again this year. The Golden Boot is given to the department in the state who raises the most money per firefighter through the Fill-the-Boot. We hope to see a the donations pour in again this year. If you would like to help MDA you can go to www.mda.org and click help now. The department has set a goal of a 20% increase in donations and are calling on all the citizens to dig deep in their respective cup holders and give all your extra change. Every little bit will help through research and equipment to help the people struggling with muscular difficulties. MDA has been the world leader in research, causes and treatment for those with neuromuscular diseases.

Golden Boot Repeat for Sherwood 4756
Sherwood Firefighters’ Union receives Golden Boot trophy By Greg Rayburn Editor Sherwood Local 4756 — the union which represents city firefighters — advised members of the Sherwood City Council Monday night that it has earned the Golden Boot award for the second year in a row due to the large amount of donations union members were able to collect for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Lt. Jeff Conley, vice president of the firefighter’s union and Lt. Rick Snead told members of the city council that $18,000 was raised by union members through fundraisers conducted in 2012. “There were 20 union members who participated, four of whom are from Gravel Ridge,” Conley said. “Sherwood Fire Department, Gravel Ridge Fire Department, and volunteers raised $18,000 which comes to $950 per member, beating second place by over $700 per member.” Conley said the money all goes to MDA for research, services and education for neuromuscular diseases. “MDA was founded in 1954 and has helped many Arkansas families,” Conley said. MDA currently helps over 800 Arkansas families affected by neuromuscular diseases. The money all stays in state to help local families suffering from these diseases.” Through the Fill-The-Boot program with local departments, MDA has raised $183,396 statewide, he said. Sherwood Local 4756 was established in 2009. “The local is very active in the community with fundraisers and support for citizens,” Conley said. “The local members are very driven and motivated for community outreach.” Snead said Sherwood firefighters began becoming interested in the MDA cause when one of its members, Kyle Harris, was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig Disease a few years ago. Conley said the money was raised through three fundraisers in 2012: two Fill-The-Boot campaigns and a charity golf tournament held at the Greens at North Hills in 2012. Conley said city firefighters are hopeful 2013 will prove to be an even bigger year for donations. From June 6-8, city firefighters manned three intersections asking for donations for the MDA cause. Union members manned the intersections of Kiehl and Arkansas 107, North Hills Boulevard and Country Club Road, and Kiehl Avenue and Brockington Road. Conley said donations from the three-day event raised $17,176. “We are anticipating this year breaking the $20,000 in donations for MDA,” Conley said.
